430 Stainless Steel Sheet

Ferritic chromium stainless, magnetic, 16–18 % Cr

430 Stainless Steel Sheet

430 is the ferritic stainless grade: 16–18 % chromium, no nickel, magnetic and considerably cheaper than 304. It resists atmospheric corrosion and most food environments well but offers less formability and weldability, so it is used where the part is formed once and does not see chlorides. It is the grade behind most appliance panels and cheap architectural trim.

How to choose

Choose 430 where cost matters and the environment is inland and non-chloride. Do not specify it for coastal sites, swimming pools or welded pressure parts.

FAQ

Is 430 magnetic?
Yes — it is ferritic, so it is magnetic in all conditions. If your customer expects a non-magnetic alloy, use 304 instead.
Can 430 replace 304 to cut cost?
Only after checking the environment and the forming route. 430 gives up corrosion resistance at the weld and in chlorides, and has a lower elongation than 304 (22 % against 40 %).
