SS400 Carbon Steel Plate

JIS G3101 structural plate and sheet

SS400 Carbon Steel Plate

SS400 is the Japanese structural grade: 245 MPa minimum yield at 16 mm and below, tensile 400–510 MPa. It is the grade most common in Southeast Asia and in plants built with Japanese machinery, and it is treated as equivalent to S235JR, A36 and Q235B. JIS G3101 controls phosphorus and sulphur but does not fix carbon and manganese, so we always confirm the mill’s actual composition on the certificate before shipping.

How to choose

Use SS400 where the drawing follows JIS. Because the standard leaves carbon and manganese to the mill, ask for the actual heat analysis if your welding procedure depends on it — we supply it with the certificate.

FAQ

Why does the SS400 certificate not always list carbon?
JIS G3101 specifies only phosphorus and sulphur for SS400; carbon, silicon and manganese are agreed between buyer and mill. Most Chinese mills roll it to about 0.20 % C max, and we can request the actual heat analysis in writing.
Can SS400 and S235JR be used interchangeably?
In most non-critical structures, yes. Where the design code is explicit, order the grade named in the drawing so the certificate matches the calculation.
